Volvo promises to release a C90, the new P1800, until 2019

After Volvo presented its new luxury sedan, the S90, the Swedish brand has released its future plans in a conversation with the British magazine AutoExpress. Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s senior vice president of design, has stated that they will first release the 90 cluster, then the 60 cluster, an all-electric vehicle and finally the XC40. According to the executive, the 90 cluster will also have a coupé and a cabriolet version, both probably named C90, in my opinion, and in 2019 the XC90 will be the oldest model in Volvo’s range. In other words, all Volvo models, including the V40, will change or be release before that year. In the worst case cenario, expect the new coupé for 2019, but we would bet on an earlier arrival.

The car will be inspired on the Volvo Concept Coupé, presented at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, and will be sold almost unchanged. A wise decision, considering it is inspired by the iconic P1800 coupé, as Mr. Ingenlath explains in the video above.

The new C90 will take a while to be released due to industrial matters, or else, only when the production capacity for the SPA based vehicles allows it to be produced. The first model manufactured over this platform has been the XC90. The next one will be the S90, with the official presentation of its station wagon variant, the V90, scheduled for the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, in March. The XC90 is a sales champion and the S90 and the V90 also tend to sell well, despite their prices. All new cars sell better in their first market years. This is why the C90 will have to wait a while.


AutoExpress estimates the new coupé would cost around £40,000, or US$60,000. If it looks as good as the concept, Volvo may even feel an urge to charge a little more, but will not do so due to competition, God bless it. Engines will probably be the same used by the XC90 and the S90. To be more specific, under the bonnet you will find the versatile four-cylinder 2.0 liter turbocharged Drive E engine in many of its configurations, such as the T5, able to deliver 197 kW, the T6, with 239 kW, and the T8, in which it is coupled with an electric engine, with plug-in capability, for 303 kW. A four-cylinder turbodiesel Drive E engine, in D4 (142 kW) and D5 (168 kW) configurations, will also be in the list.
