There is no more mystery about the Hyundai Ioniq’s appearance. We have shown you the first pictures of the car totally uncovered a few weeks ago, but now we have the official deal, freshly released from Korea. Even if only of the back and of the interior of the new Toyota Prius competitor. The back can be seen above, with a tailgate that reminds us of the Citroën C4 VTR, as we have mentioned in our previous article. The interior is below and is quite conventional, even if apparently very well finished and functional. The nice part is that we have plenty of technical details to share with you. Not all of it, but a good amount of data.
You won’t be able to call the Ioniq a hybrid. Before that, you will have to define the version of the Ioniq you are referring to. It offer three options of power: full electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid, confirming previous rumours that it would do so. This is the first vehicle to offer such a wide variety of powertrains. Its closest competitor is the Ford Focus, with the Electric version, but the C segment hatchback does not have a hybrid or a hybrid plug-in version. That would probably make car enthusiasts turn the other way, but Hyundai promises a fantastic handling with fuel economy. And it has presented the reasons to believe it has achieved that.
The new vehicle makes an extensive use of aluminum in order to reduce mass. It is used in the hood, tailgate, front and rear back beam and in suspension parts such as front-wheel lower arm, front-wheel knuckle and rear-wheel carrier. This has allowed the car to let go of 12.6 kg alone. Besides the aluminum use, the car is also produced with ultra high strengh steel:53% of its body structure is composed by this material, called AHSS (Advanced High Strengh Steel) by Hyundai.
The rear suspension is independent, of the multilink kind. Its battery pack is located close to the rear axle, apparently under the back seats, what must ensure a nice weight distribution. We are not sure on how much the car ended up weighing, but its powertrain seems to be up to what the car will require for a satisfactory ride.
The electric engine that will power the hybrid version is able to generate 32 kW and a torque of 170 Nm. It works in association with an engine that Hyundai claims to be the most efficient thermal engine of the world, with a 40% use of all the fuel energy. It is the 1.6 Kappa GDI engine already used in many of Hyundai’s vehicles, but with an Atkinson cycle, what makes it deliver only 77 kW and 147 Nm. There are always losses in the integration of both units, but they must not be very high. What about a car that has about 120 kW and 317 Nm of torque? It must be interesting, regardless of being a hybrid or not. We just hope the 6-speed automated dual clutch transmission is superbly tuned and does not interfere in a bad way to the driving experience. As a CVT normally does for the hybrids it is fitted to.
According to Hyundai, the Ioniq is built over an entirely new platform. No details have been released on the full electric version or on the plug-in hybrid so far. We will have to wait for the Geneva Motor Show reveal, in March, in order to know all details. Or to have someone to inquire about them.
