You probably remember that Tesla does not want to sell only the Model S and the Model X. It is also working on the Model 3, a car that is supposed to cost around US$ 30,000 and that Auto Express has even tried to present with the images you see in this article. But it has now confirmed it will also produce a similar sized SUV, called Model Y. And Jalopnik has remembered a fantastic history on Tesla’s line-up: it can easily be named S3XY!
When a friend asked Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, what would be the name of the next model from the company after the S and the X, the entrepreneur said: the Model E. It was supposed to be a joke, but the name caught on and Tesla tried to register it. Ford has threatened to sue Tesla and it gave up registering the Model E, which eventually became the Model 3.
Now the Model Y has been confirmed by the Electrek website, which quotes unnamed sources to say Tesla will reveal two new cars in March. Tesla has denied the reveal of the SUV based on the Model 3 in March, but not that it is working on such a vehicle. Nor that it will be named Model Y, as Elon Musk himself has confirmed in Twitter and then deleted. Not before screenshots have been made…
We hope they keep the name of the car in order to have a S3XY line-up!
According to Electrek, the new sedan from Tesla will be rear-wheel drive and, with a 60kWh battery, it can reach a 240 miles (390 km) range. It is expected to cost around US$ 35,000 before government incentives, what will make it cheaper than the Chevrolet Bolt. And we can expect even more fire on Tesla’s decision to sell directly to their customers.
And it may receive larger batteries, for a broader range and more power, and all-wheel drive. The first deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2017, probably in order to count with the Gigafactory, which is slated to start production next year.
