It did not take long for Alpina to reveal its version of the new 7-Series sedan. The new B7 xDrive comes with four-wheel drive, lots of customization and, above all, a new 4.4 V8 TwinPower able to deliver 447 kW, instead of the 330 kW of the stock 7-Series it is based on. With such an engine, the B7 xDrive is able to reach 330 km/h and to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 s.
The 7-Series weight advantage with its Carbon Core structure, which makes the 5.25 m long sedan weigh only 2,110 kg, is kept by the Alpina B7 xDrive: it weighs exactly the same. There are specific plates, badges and other finishing elements that make a BMW 7-Series become the B7, but they are enough for the car to be considered entirely new. An Alpina, legally speaking, is not a BMW.
The main changes have been made to the engine include the air intake system, the intercooler and the turbochargers configuration. The turbocompressors are different from the ones used by BMW, for example, and they have enlarged inlet and outlet diameters. The air intake development focus has been on making it flow as free as possible, what includes large-volume coolers, large diameter hosing, air filter housing and clean air intake manifold.
An indirect intercooler system (air to water) has aided the company to implement short charge-air intake paths, in order for the engine to have prompt delivery of power. As a high performance engine, the V8 also demanded additional external water coolers and a transmission oil cooler. Special Mahle pistons and NGK spark plugs, as well as a stainless steel sport exhaust and 21-inch special wheels, complete the package.
