When Geely presented its concept at the São Paulo Auto Show, in 2014, I met Casey Hyun, Hyundai’s chief designer, having a close look at it. The first thing he told me about the concept was: “This is no concept at all. This car is ready for production”. It could be, but Geely took 2 more years to present it. And the production version of the SUV concept has been baptized as Emgrand GS.
The new SUV is 4.44 m long, 1.83 m wide, 1.55 m tall and it has a wheelbase of 2.68 m. It is a typical C segment vehicle and it is probably the first product to use the new C-Segment Modular Architecture, or CMA, that Volvo and Geely have started to develop at the CEVT (China Euro Vehicle Technology) center in Gothenburg, Sweden.
There are 2 engine options for it, both running on petrol: a 1.3 4-cylinder turbocharged unit that delivers 96 kW and a 1.8 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that produces 99 kW. The transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox. While the concept featured a hybrid powertrain, the final version has not presented this option so far. It is possibly still under development.
Volvo’s products over the CMA platform are expected to start showing up next year. The second generation XC60 was expected to use it, but it will apparently apply the SPA instead. We still have to put the pieces together in order to confirm everything, but the Emgrand GS is a car everyone should pay attention to. Not only because it tends to be sold in all markets Geely is already present, but also because it is beautiful, will probably be very competitive in terms of price and will very likely perform well in safety tests.
