Fiat releases the Mobi, its A segment hatchback, in Brazil

The X1H project from Fiat has finally arrived. The company presented yesterday the Mobi, its A segment hatchback, created to compete with the Volkswagen up! and the future Renault Kwid. MotorChase was at the presentation and is able to conclude that this is the first car that has had a presentation mainly focused on a gadget other than in its engine or other technical solutions. We may see more presentations like this for a generation of drivers that is more worried about cell phones than about driving dynamics, but we surely hope that is not the case.


The Mobi is 3.57 m long, 1.63 m wide, 1.49 m tall and has a wheelbase of only 2.31 m. It has a version with a higher ground clearance, called Way, that is 1.55 m tall. Its weight ranges from 907 kg to 966 kg and the sole engine offered for it is the 1.0 4-cylinder Fire engine. It produces 55 kW with ethanol and 54 kW with petrol at 6,250 rpm, with a respective torque of 97 Nm or 93 Nm at 3,850 rpm. Top speed is 154 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.4 s. If you are not very excited, we perfectly understand.



With such attributes, the car will surely have a huge price appeal, right? Not really. Its cheapest version, called Easy (easy to buy, perhaps?), costs R$ 31,900, equivalent to US$ 9,000 or to € 8,000. Fiat offers cheaper cars, such as the Palio, sold for R$ 29,160 in its 3-door body (even the 5-door is cheaper: R$ 31,670). The Fiat Uno, also larger and roomier than the Mobi, costs R$ 30.010 in its 3-door version. The 5-door is slightly more expensive: R$ 32,310. We are not really sure what is Fiat’s price strategy, but we fear it may not succeed.

For that starting price, the car offers a steering wheel, seats and tires. No power steering, no power windows, no sound system, no electric locks on the doors and no climate control. The more expensive version, called Way on, costs R$ 43,800, equivalent to US$ 12,400 or to € 11,000, comes with all these itens. But costs that much. Such a car was expected to cost R$ 25,000 for starters, or US$ 7,000. Or € 6,300.



The big gadget Fiat spend most of the presentation talking about is the Mobi Live On, a system that turns your mobile into the radio controlling screen. So you would better trade your phone for a tablet, in case you prefer to have a better view of what is happening.



The car looks bigger than it is, due to its design, and it has even received a nickname, especially for its white units: StormTrooper. It fits nicely. Today we will get to drive it and to check more details of the car. Keep with us so that we can tell you all about how the car rides.
