Citroën anticipates the CXperience Concept before the 2016 Paris Motor Show

The Citroën CX is considered as the last big Citroën. It had an unusually long career of almost 17 years, with 1.2 million units produced. It is the sort of reputation any car company should revere. And this is what Citroën intends to do with the CXperience Concept, one of its main attractions for the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Ironically, the French brand does not spend a single line in its press release to make the connection between the 2 models. In other words, while the designers resorted to heritage, the PR people decided to ignore it. Way to go, Citroën…


The CXperience Concept is a giant 4.85 m long hatchback. And we say that because all of the rear overhang that could characterize a shooting brake or a station wagon has been transferred to the front. What is it with PSA that all its cars have an overwhelming front overhang? The car has a 3 m wheelbase and it is 2 m wide and 1.37 m high.

If it was to be solely a concept, the CXperience would certainly be an all-electric vehicle, but it is a plug-in hybrid model powered primarily by the 1.6 4-cylinder THP unit. This is what we can infer by its description: a petrol engine that can deliver between 110 kW and 147 kW, exactly like the 1.6 THP can.

It is aided by an 80-kW electric engine placed at the rear axle and fed by a 13 kWh battery installed under the seats of the concept. It provides an electric only range of 60 km and takes 4 and a half hours to recharge in a common outlet. The 8-speed automatic gearbox placed transversely makes the connection between the electric powertrain and the front 1.6 THP engine.

All this is a sign that we may eventually see a production version of this car. It would be especially popular in China, even more if it was a sedan, what may eventually happen. The CXperience also brings the Advanced Comfort solution presented by a C-Cactus prototype. The one that will try to replace the hydropneumatic suspension in effects and within the budget and scale required by PSA. Curiously, the same PSA that fired every designer that tried to give the CX a worthy heir back in the 1990’s… The turns that life takes, even in the automotive world, show us heritage is always something to respect.
