BMW is a few days from revealing the 7th generation 5 Series, but, as usual, some images of the car have leaked before the official revelation. This is the G30, as the new sedan is internally named.
The images have first appeared at Germancarforum.com and present us with a smaller 7 Series. Not just by chance, of course: The 2 sedans are built over the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform and apply the Carbon Core technology, a mix of carbon fiber and ultra high strength steel that made the G30 about 80 kg lighter than the F10.
This version, the 540i, does not use a V8, as in the good old days, but rather a 3.0-liter TwinPower 6-cylinder mill from the B58 family. BMW will also use the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine for the first time in a 5 Series. This engine comes from a series of modular engines that include a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder units. Each cylinder comes with 500 cm³ and lots of common parts, such as we have suggested FCA could have done with the GSE engines.
The interior also presents us with a 7 Series standard and lots of luxury, as we came to expect from a 5 Series. It is a pity we have not obtained any technical specifications, but we’ll soon have them, as the car presentation should happen in a matter of few days.
