The NSX is the sort of car that comes before the brand under which it is sold. Even because it is only an Acura in some places. In others, it is a Honda pure and simple. In the USA, probably one of the biggest markets for it, the car will be an Acura and the company has already released its prices: it will start at US$156,000, but since freight is always part of the price, and it costs US$1,800, its final price will be US$157,800. The top trim with all options will cost US$207,500.
According to Acura, the NSX will be the first built-to-order model they will offer. This is due to the high level of customization the NSX will admit. There are six different options for the wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon fiber roof and so on. Jon Ikeda, general manager of the Acura division, calls it the pinnacle of expression within the brand. As if this sort of machine would need that sort of attribute to stand out from the competitors…
The new NSX is an engineering masterpiece. Its 4.47 m long body, with a 2.63 m wheelbase, is propelled by a twin-turbo 3.5 V6 petrol engine able to deliver 373 kW, along with three electric engines. Two in the front axle and one placed between the engine and the 9-speed automated dual clutch transmission, powering the rear wheels.
The car will take torque vectoring to a new level and counts with a total of 427 kW, more than double the power of the original NSX. The car is 1.94 m wide, 1.22 m tall and weighs 1,723 kg.
The ones who have already driven it, such as the Car and Driver guys, say the NSX would be the perfect machine if it was not so silent and it it had a fifth driving mode beyond Quiet (full electric driving mode), Sport (default), Sport Plus and Track.
Since the car aims to deliver quick laps in the last driving mode, its traction and stability controls do not allow for the driver to make mistakes. And turning them off has proven to be quite dangerous. Car and Driver would like one in which the driver could see the edge of the cliff, but not fall right into it.
Sales will begin only in the Spring of 2016. The car has been developed and will be produced in Marysville, Ohio. Even when it is introduced in Japan and Europe, at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, production will be exclusively held in the USA. We believe that is just for the time being. If the car’s demand goes further than it is expected, we bet on a Japan production facility very quickly.
