Volkswagen has released yesterday the final name of its new compact sedan for India. The car is based on the fifth generation Polo, but with a nostalgic appeal, as the picture of the undisguised car, obtained by MotorBeam, can now reveal. If you remember the third generation Polo sedan, called Classic in some markets, the Ameo looks just like it, only with a squarer design.
The Ameo will be launched in India at the 2016 Auto Expo, in New Delhi, in February.
As a Polo based car, it will share its engines and transmissions with the hatchback. In other words, a 1.2 3-cylinder petrol engine able to pump out 55 kW at 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm at 3,750 rpm and a 1.5 4-cylinder TDI turbodiesel engine that generates 66 kW at 4,200 rpm and 230 Nm from 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm. Both are equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions. If the Ameo ever gets a GT version, equipped with a 1.2 TSI petrol engine that generates 77 kW at 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm from 1,500 rpm to 4,100 rpm, it will use the 7-speed DSG automated gearbox. There is also a GT diesel version, with the same 1.5 TDI engine, also generation 77 kW, but it keeps the 5-speed manual transmission.
