Alpine would be working on an SUV, according to L’Auto Journal

The French magazine L’Auto Journal has taken the perfect opportunity to bring us this news. Still amazed by the Alpine Vision, we have been warned by it that Alpine is working on a second model. Ever since Porsche taught us that a company cannot survive from a single car, especially a sports car, no matter how good it is, everyone seems to have learned the lesson. So has Renault. This is why there will probably be an Alpine SUV along the A120.

Alpine’s Cayenne will in fact be the same size of the Macan, what makes perfect sense with the company’s philosophy of  low weight. It will be built over the CMF C/D platform, the same one used by the Mégane and the Talisman. It will be a four-wheel drive vehicle and its power should be similar to the one presented by the future A120. In other words, it will be powered by a 220 kW 1.8 TCe petrol engine, probably derived from the 1.6 TCe used by the Clio RS. There is also word of a 147 kW 1.3 turbo petrol engine.

The new SUV will cost around 40,000 euros and will probably arrive by 2018. Considering how well SUVs are selling nowadays, it seems a very intelligent strategy in order to keep Alpine alive. And kicking.
