SCOOP! – This is probably the new Cruze-based SUV, Captiva Sport’s replacement! (UPDATE)

GM’s project Phoenix, in Rosario, Argentina, has made an investment of US$ 750 million in order to produce D2XX platform cars. In case this is not intelligible to you, we can explain: Rosario’s plant will produce the second generation Cruze and the Cruze hatch there. But there is a third model to be manufactured in Argentina as well and it will be a C segment SUV, a replacement for the Captiva Sport that is currently produced in Mexico. These patent images have just been published by Carscoops, but our friends there do not have  any idea what this could be. We do: it probably is Cruze’s SUV. In other words, the third model to be produced in Rosario.

Apart from the fact that it is clearly a Chevrolet SUV, there are other elements that lead us to this conclusion. The first one is that, although the patents have been done in Europe, South Korea is listed as the country of priority. It is also the country that has developed the D2XX platform and the second generation Cruze. The first generation Cruze was first presented there, as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere.

The second element is the side view of the SUV. Notice how low it seems to be, as a car derived crossover would certainly appear. Finally, there is currently the expectation for only one new Chevrolet SUV, the one that will be built over the D2XX platform. And we rest our case, hoping for more information in order to say that we have nailed it or to apologize for our assumption. But we really believe we are right on this one…

UPDATE

Unfortunately, we were wrong. Many of our friends and readers have warned us that these patent images refer to the restyled Chevrolet Captiva. It was presented at the 32nd Thailand International Motor Expo, in December last year. The patent images are not even new, as you can see. Check the final car pictures below.

What we are really waiting for is the Chevrolet version of the Buick Envision, as our friends have warned us. This Chinese built SUV uses the D2XX platform and another very important thing: a 1.5 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the same one that is expected to power the second generation Cruze in South American markets. Called 1.5 SIDI, this engine has a displacement of 1,490 cm³ and generates 124 kW at 5,600 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,700 rpm to 4,400 rpm. Envision is also equipped by a mouth-watering 2.0 4-cylinder turbo petrol unit that generates 191 kW at 5,500 rpm and 353 Nm from 2,000 rpm to 5,300 rpm, but we do not expect to see such engines produced in South America.

As for the Envision itself, it is a 4.67 m long and 1.84 m wide SUV, with a 2.75 m wheelbase. Its height varies from 1.66 m to 1.70 m depending on the version, as well as the weight, that goes from 1,575 kg to 1,800 kg.

It will be the base for a replacement for the Opel Antara, a car that is rebadged as the Chevrolet Captiva Sport we were referring to. As soon as the real car shows up, we will bring you all the news about it. In the mean time, we would just like to apologize for the mistake and thank all of our readers that helped us correct it.
