Elon Musk has just introduced the new Tesla Model 3 confirming many of the information we already had about it and clarifying some doubts that the entry-level Tesla still presented. The first and foremost doubt about it was how would it look. And this mystery is gone. Have a good look at the car above, one that has received an amazing amount of 115,000 reservations in about 24 hours. That amount makes Tesla have US$ 115 million dollar in cash for a car it will only start delivering in a year and a half from now. This will be studied in business schools for years to come.
Unfortunately Tesla has not provided press images of the car so far and we were lucky enough to have had the idea of taking screenshots of the live presentation video. Otherwise we would not be able to show you the new car.
Musk has confirmed it will cost US$ 35,000, will have a minimum range of 215 miles (346 km), will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds and will be a 5-star vehicle in terms of safety in all tests. We have no reasons to doubt it, since Model S has already done so and the Model X will probably get there as well. The Model 3 will also feature Autopilot and supercharger capacity. Musk has also promised more expensive versions capable of longer range and better performance. “At Tesla, we do not produce slow cars”, he has stated.
In the beginning of the presentation, Tesla’s CEO has reminded the present fans, which interrupted him every once in a while, that Tesla had begun with the Roadster, then produced the Model S and the Model X. He has not gone into the future smaller SUV Tesla will produce, the Model Y, but he said Tesla Master Plan included four cars. We believe that plan was created after the Roadster’s success, not before it.
Musk also went on saying Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable mobility and to stop the bad things the combustion engine car has brought as a side effect, such as global warming and respiratory diseases. In order to do so, they are expanding Tesla stores from the current 215 locations to 441 locations, which will probably include the new countries he has mentioned in a recent tweet: Brazil, India, South Africa, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Ireland. It is worth to remember Singapore has recently commited a huge mistake with a used Model S. With official sales there, things tend to get sorted out.
Musk also stated Tesla intends to bring up the quantity of supercharger spreaded all over the world to 7,200 units by the end of 2017. The quantity of destination chargers will be elevated to 15,000 units.
We will wait for better pictures of the car and its interior, which will seat 5 people and carry their luggage both in a front and a rear trunk. But we must say that many more will probably place a deposit for the car after having seen it. Remember that 115,000 people have done so without even having an idea of what the cheapest Tesla would be…
