BMW celebrates the 30 years of the first M3 with the M3 30 Jahre

While the first BMW M3, derived from the E30, has been presented in 1985 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but BMW considers it was really born in 1986. More precisely around March, when BMW took automotive journalists to evaluate it at the Mugello racetrack. To celebrate the 30 years of the M3, the German automaker decided to create a limited run called 30 Jahre (30 years, in German) that will see only 500 units produced. A collectible car from the start.

The current M3 is the first one to deserve a codename of its own: F80. It would be technically based on the F30/F31 3-Series. It is 4.67 m long, 1.88 m wide, 1.43 m tall and it has a wheelbase of 2.81 m. It weighs 1.595 kg, or 395 kg more than the pioneer E30, which weighed only 1,200 kg. If it got heavier, it is also much more powerful: 317 kW in its regular version, while the original had a 2.3 6-cylinder engine that delivered 147 kW.

But all M3 30 Jahre will come with the Competition Package, which increases the total output of the 3.0 TwinPower 6-cylinder in line engine to 331 kW. The standard Competition Package also includes forged 20-inch M light-alloy wheels (front: 265/30 R20, rear: 285/30 R20), new springs, dampers and stabilizers, improved Active M differential on the rear axle and Dynamic Stability Control feature (DSC) and recalibrated curves for the 3 driving modes the car offers: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. But that is just part of what makes the M3 30 Jahre special.

 

Besides bringing an inscription with their numbers in the series, printed over the beautiful carbon fiber console, the M3 30 Jahre also comes with the logo “30 Jahre” on the front door sills, the front wheel arches air vents and the front headrests. The cars will be painted in the exclusive Macao Blue Metallic color, the same one that was offered as a special color for the E30 M3.

The car comes with a 6-speed manual as standard, as well as full leather Merino seats with a Black/Fjord Blue bi-color arrangement. Optionally the future owner can order the M3 30 Jahre with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and Black/Silverstone seats. For € 10,000 more than one would have to pay in Germany for a Competition Package M3. Or more exactly € 90,290. Deliveries will start in June, exactly 30 years after the first contracts of purchase for the E30 M3 started being signed.
