Hyundai will have an A segment SUV, the Carlino, in 2018

In an interview to The Hans India, Hyundai’s CEO for the Asian country, Y K Koo, has declared Hyundai will have a sub-4-m SUV for that market by 2018. The new SUV would be based on the Carlino concept, presented at the 2016 New Delhi AutoExpo.

According to Koo, who appears in this picture above beside the SUV mock-up, the new A segment SUV will be powered by the company’s 1.0 turbocharged engine that currently powers the i20 and its Brazilian cousin, the HB20. There is no word on whether the small SUV will be offered in other markets, but there is no reason to doubt it. Scale is a magic word for the automotive industry and overseas production or even exports of the Carlino would be a great possibility for Hyundai, even if the focus of the company is on India’s domestic market.

In the same interview, Koo has said Hyundai will become a premium brand in India, leaving the segment in which the Renault Kwid competes to other automakers.
