VW Golf GTI Clubsport S breaks the Nürburgring Nordschleife record for FWD cars: 7:49.21

When Honda set the record at Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2014 for front-wheel drive cars, with a Civic Type R, it must have thought the record would last for a long time. Well, the next generation Civic Type R will have to try again, since Volkswagen has claimed the best time at the mythical race track. With a Golf GTI Clubsport S, a car that has not been officially presented, and the German driver Benny Leuchter. You can see the record-breaking run right below.

The GTI Clubsport S is a very special Golf. It will be launched at the GTI event at Lake Wörthersee, in Germany, from May 4th until May 7th, 2016. Based on the GTI Clubsport, it has a 228 kW 2.0 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, basically the same one used by the regular GTI, but pushed to its limits. The maximum torque of 380 Nm comes between 1,700 rpm and 5,300 rpm. It is the most powerful Golf GTI ever produced. It loses only to the Golf GTI TCR, with its 243 kW. Only 400 GTI Clubsport S units will be produced, 100 already reserved only for Germany. All of them will be numbered with a center console plate. Besides the massive power, the car also comes with some weight-saving measures. It is a 3-door only hatchback with no rear seats. The driver and his eventual passenger will accommodate in racing bucket seats. There will be only 3 color available: “Tornado Red”, “Pure White” and “Deep Black Pearl Effect”. The same ones offered to the GTI.

Another measure to keep the weight down is adopting a 6-speed manual transmission, but they do not restrict to these two we have mentioned. The Clubsport S also uses a smaller battery and has suppressed insulation, floor mats, the variable-height trunk floor and the rear parcel shelf, as well as adopted an aluminum subframe for the front suspension and aluminum brake covers. The Clubsport S is 30 kg lighter than the Clubsport, with a total weight of 1,285 kg.

The Clubsport S goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 s and reaches a top speed of 261 km/h. Volkswagen has not released how much it will cost, but that is really not important. With its limited production run and numbered plates on the console, it will become a collectors’ item. And many will envy the ones that are able to buy the Nürburgring Nordschleife record-breaker. Even if it lasts even less than the record the Civic Type R has established. What is very likely, if we may say so.
