This is the technical presentation the Audi A5 and the S5 deserve

When Audi released the new A5 and S5, we missed the complete technical specifications of the new cars. But Audi has been quick correcting it. And it did so with a large amount of technical pictures that deserved an article of their own. Cutaways, torque curves, material descriptions, function descriptions and gorgeous images that had to be shared with our readers. And they are all below.

Audi A5 Coupé

The new A5 is 4.67 m long, 1.85 m wide, 1.37 m tall and has a wheelbase of 2.76 m. It is built over the MLB 2, or MLB Evo, platform, just like the 5th generation A4, which is much lighter than the previous one. The A5 2.0 Coupé used to weigh 1,510 kg, while the new one weighs 1,390 kg, or 120 kg lighter.

That weight reduction has been obtained with a combination of different materials, such as ultra high strength steel (hot-formed) and aluminum, besides common steel, mainly in the external part of the body. Using it may make the car heavier than it could be, but also cheaper to fix.

The nobler materials are reserved for the car structure, the one responsible for keeping passengers safe in the case of a crash.

The car suspension is composed by a five-link arrangement front and rear. With damper control, making it adjustable for more comfort or a more sporty behavior depending on what the driver decides to have.

The A5 has 5 engine options: 2 petrol units and 3 diesel powerplants. The entry-level petrol engine is the 2.0 4-cylinder with Miller cycle or, as Audi prefers, B Cycle.

Audi A5 Coupé

It pumps out 140 kW from 4,200 rpm up to 6,000 rpm and 320 Nm from 1,450 rpm until 4,200 rpm. Check its power and torque “curves” below (they look more like tables…).

The A5 also has the option of a stronger 2.0 TFSI engine.

Audi A5 Coupé quattro

It delivers 185 kW from 5,000 rpm until 6,000 rpm and 370 Nm from 1,600 rpm up to 4,500 rpm. This one runs on the regular Otto cycle. Look at its amazing graphics.

When we speak about the engine options, the first one is a 2.0 TDI.

Audi A5 Coupé ultra

It also delivers 140 kW, but from 3,800 rpm up to 4,200 rpm, and 400 Nm from 1,750 rpm until 3,000 rpm.

The last engine is the 3.0 TDI, with 2 output choices.

Audi A5 Coupé

The first one offers 160 kW from 4,000 rpm until 5,000 rpm and the same 400 Nm, but starting from a lower rpm (1,250 rpm) and with a wider range (up to 3,750 rpm).

The other one delivers 210 kW from 3,750 rpm up to 4,000 rpm and 620 Nm from 1,500 rpm until 3,000 rpm.

The entry-level engines (both petrol and diesel) offer a 6-speed manual transmission and the 7-speed S-Tronic automated dual-clutch transmission.

Audi A5 Coupé quattro

All the other versions of the car use the S-Tronic gearbox apart from the 3.0 V6 TDI, which has too much torque for it to cope with. For this engine, the transmission is an 8-speed automatic.

The A5 offers as an option the Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, which uses 19 speakers and 755 W of power.

The A5 Coupé has a wide variety of driving aids. So much integrated cameras and sensors that we are sure it is not just to help the current drivers, but to prepare for the autonomous vehicles of the future. Check all of them below.

The systems are all connected to the internet in order to get real time information.

Audi A5 Coupé

This is what allows the car to have the Predictive Efficiency Assistant, a system that helps save fuel.

Audi A5 Coupé

The park assist system helps the A5 park both in parallel or perpendicular spots, but not only that. The same system acts to detect people in front of the car, other vehicles passing behind it when in reverse and even warns if it is safe or not to leave the car when parked in a street.

The most fascinating system the car presents is the Matrix LED headlight, which regulates the light beams in order not to blind other drivers while offering the best possible illumination.

Audi A5 Coupé

Its sensors detect oncoming cars, vehicles in front of it and even signs in order to adjust.

The A5 also detects the surrounding cars with its lane assistant and warns if the driver gets away of the lane in which the car is running, as well as if other vehicls are in any sort of blind spot.

Audi has even given the A5 a turn assist. We just wonder if it guesses the driver’s intention and activates by itself the turn lights. Any such invention would be a huge success, but it is very unlikely, so we will remain singing Paul Gilbert’s song.

And then we get to the S5.

Audi S5 Coupé

It is slightly larger than the A5: s 4.69 m long, 1.85 m wide, 1.37 m tall and has a wheelbase of 2.77 m. It weighs 1,615 kg and is powered by a 3.0 V6 TFSI that delivers 260 kW from 5,400 rpm up to 6,400 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,370 rpm up to 4,500 rpm. Why didn’t Audi release these info from the start? Good question, but we are glad it has done so now. With all this car porn to feast our eyes!
