When you start a business, you always hope for the best. You expect the public to reach your products, to like them and to keep on coming for what you have to offer. An intelligent business case tries to offer items that are in high demand. When it comes to Journalism, you expect the public to keep on wanting interesting news, presented in an interesting fashion. This is pretty much what motivated me to create MotorChase. After a successful career working for others, it was time to work for myself. One step in that direction has been working with partners. First, with the guys from Autopolis. And later with FlatOut!. My time span there has been extremely fruitful. Earlier this year, I received an honourable mention at the 10th AEA Environment Journalism Prize with the article “Diesel, Atkinson e Miller – conheça os ciclos mais econômicos de motor” (Diesel, Atkinson and Miller – Know the most fuel-efficient engine cycles). The same article won yesterday the 10th SAE Journalism Prize.
It is not the first time I have this sort of encouragement to keep on working. In 2013, while I still worked for the Brazilian edition of Car and Driver, I have written an article called “Por que sem carro?” (Why car free?), a reaction against the idea that cars are the bad guys in our society. The invention that has given mankind independence and new horizons couldn’t (and can’t) be treated in such unfair way. And it won the 7th edition of the SAE Journalism Prize.
I have also had the pleasure to win the AEA Environment Prize, in its 9th edition, in 2015. Both prizes are granted by engineers associations. The SAE, or Society of Automotive Engineers, is widely known worldwide. The AEA, or Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Automotiva, is the Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering. It is the sort of recognition that any automotive journalist should be proud of receiving. And I truly am.
Our job is to translate technical information in a way that the general public will get it. To do it in a way engineers will feel their job was understood and respected. To present customers with the best buying options they may get for their money. To search for worthy news. And to present all of them in the best way possible.
When this work receives a recognition, it is a source of joy, but this is not the main reason for going to the other extreme in journalism, or become news instead of news producer. We have only decided to tell you about the prize so that you can be sure MotorChase’s articles bear the same quality of the ones I used to write for Car and Driver, Quatro Rodas or FlatOut!. If they are not even better, not only due to the additional experience I have gathered as years go by, but also to the additional motivation an author work allows. Today, MotorChase is me.
