Jeep has just released the official images and information on the new Compass. The presentation took place in Recife, Brazil, close to the plant that will first deliver the crossover, in Goiana. Sergio Marchionne, Mike Manley and Ralph Gilles attended the presentation, but only Gilles gave an introduction on the model. Designed by Chris Piscitelli, the new Compass is said to be the most aerodynamic Jeep ever, with a Cd of 0.35.
In Brazil, it will be offered with 2 engines: a 2.0-liter TigerShark and a 2.0 Multijet turbodiesel. The first is imported from the USA. The second, from Italy. The 2.0 TigerShark is flexible in fuel and, with ethanol, it delivers 122 kW at 6,200 rpm and 201 Nm at 4,000 rpm. When it uses petrol, the engine generates 117 kW at 6,200 rpm and 195 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It only comes mated to a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission.
As for the Multijet, it produces 125 kW at 3,750 rpm, 350 Nm at 1,750 rpm and is mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox from ZF. Diesel versions are exclusively 4×4, while the TigerShark is front-wheel drive.
The crossover is 4.42 m long, 1.82 m wide, 1.65 m tall and it has a wheelbase of 2.64 m. Its trunk can hold 410 l of luggage in most derivatives and 388 l on the Trailhawk. The front and the rear suspension are of the McPherson kind.
At first, 4 trims will be offered. The entry-level is the Sport. It will offer ESC as standard, something that developed markets already have, but not Brazil. Can you imagine such a vehicle with only front airbags? This is what the Brazilian law demands. And it is all Jeep offers for R$ 99,990, or US$ 30,861.
The Longitude comes both with the TigerShark and the Multijet engine. Both come with dual-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels and an 8.4-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system. This trim costs R$ 106,990, or US$ 33,022, with the petrol engine and R$ 132,990, or US$ 41,046, with the Multijet.
The Limited derivative is the one that has been photographed by Autoo in Brazil. It is the only one with the black roof. With xenon headlights and a choice of black or caramel leather seats, besides 7 airbags, it will only be sold with the TigerShark engine at a price of R$ 124,990, or the equivalent to US$ 38,577.
The top trim of the Compass will be the Trailhawk. Instead of an approach angle of 28.7º and a departure angle of 31.9º, it offers respectively 29.1º and 33.1º due to a higher ground clearance: 22.9 cm in place of 21.8 cm. The new Jeep comes with a Jeep Active Drive Low 4WD system that will be better explained at the press conference tomorrow.
The Trailhawk comes as loaded as the Limited, but at a steeper price: R$ 149,990, or something like US$ 43,293. The Trailhawk and the Limited have the option of a High Tech package that adds Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beam and Front Collision Warning and Prevention. Jeep has not disclosed the price for this package.
Sales will start tomorrow in Brazil, with the first deliveries taking place by October 15. By November 5 cars will already be available at dealerships for immediate delivery. In the USA, the new Compass will only start to be sold by March and it apparently will not kill the Patriot immediately, since the compact SUV still sells well in the American market.
